After Your Smog Check: When DMV Gets It

You just finished at JOE'S DRIVE THRU SMOG CHECK™. Good news: the electronic transfer to DMV is already included in your $60 visit - certificate and transfer, out the door.

So when can you renew? Here is how timing usually works after an inspection at our North Hollywood Star Station.

The report usually updates in 2 to 3 hours, and it can take up to 48 hours depending on the state's network. How you renew matters:

- DMV or AAA in person: you may go in immediately after the inspection

- Online: best to wait 24 to 48 hours

- Kiosk (if you want stickers printed right away): best to wait 48 hours

Either way, always pay for your renewal on or before the due date so you do not pick up late penalties from DMV.

How long until the smog report updates at DMV

After your inspection here, the report usually updates in 2 to 3 hours. Sometimes the state's network takes longer, up to 48 hours.

That is the window we see for the electronic update after a visit at JOE'S DRIVE THRU SMOG CHECK™. Plan your renewal method around it, not around a guess.

Paying in person at DMV or AAA

If you are paying at a DMV office or AAA in person, you may go in immediately after the inspection. Many customers head straight over once they leave the lane.

Bring whatever DMV asks for at the counter. If something has not landed yet, staff can usually tell you on the spot.

Paying online

Renewing online? Best to wait 24 to 48 hours after your smog check so the report has time to show up in the system.

Trying too early can mean the site still does not see your certificate. Give it that day or two, then renew, and still finish on or before your due date.

Paying at a DMV kiosk for stickers

Using a DMV kiosk and you want it to print stickers immediately? Best to wait 48 hours after the inspection.

We do not promise same-day sticker print at the kiosk. Waiting the full 48 hours is the safer bet when you need that print right then.

Don't miss your due date

However you renew, in person, online, or kiosk, pay on or before the due date. Waiting past it can mean late penalties from DMV.

If your due date is close, lean toward in-person DMV or AAA right after the test, or leave enough buffer for the online / kiosk waits above.

How long is a California smog certificate good for?

Per the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) (bar.ca.gov): if the vehicle passes, the station issues a smog certificate that is electronically sent to DMV and is valid for 90 days.

That is BAR's rule. We cite it as BAR states it. We are not inventing extra validity windows on this page.

Your $60 visit at JOE'S DRIVE THRU SMOG CHECK™ already includes that certificate and the electronic transfer.

How long did the inspection take?

Wondering about the visit itself before all this DMV timing? At our DRIVE THRU SMOG CHECK™ lane the inspection usually takes 8 to 10 minutes per vehicle once you are at the bay.

California DMV smog FAQ (plain English)

According to California DMV’s Smog Inspections page, here is the plain-English version of the rules people ask us about most. Full details live on DMV. We are summarizing, not rewriting the law.

When is a smog inspection required?

According to California DMV, a smog inspection is required when you register or renew registration in California, with exceptions. Check your renewal notice and the DMV smog page for your case.

Which vehicles usually do not need a smog inspection?

According to California DMV, examples of vehicles that usually do not need a smog inspection include: gasoline vehicles 1975 or older; diesel vehicles 1997 or older or over 14,000 lbs GVW; natural gas vehicles over 14,000 lbs; electric vehicles; and gasoline vehicles less than eight model years old (for the usual renewal exception). See DMV for the full list and current exceptions.

At Joe’s: We only inspect 2000–2026 gasoline or hybrid light-duty vehicles. No diesel. If your DMV notice says you need a STAR station, we are a STAR station at 10909 Burbank Blvd, North Hollywood.

My car is new. Do I still need a smog when I renew?

According to California DMV: starting Jan 1, 2019, if the vehicle is less than 4 model years old you can pay a smog abatement fee instead of a smog inspection for the first 8 years the vehicle is registered. Fee amounts change. See DMV Smog Inspections for current details. We do not list dollar amounts here.

Where can I get a smog inspection / what is a STAR station?

According to California DMV, smog inspections are done at DMV-authorized smog check stations. The STAR program began Jan 1, 2013 and replaced Gold Shield / Test Only. If your renewal notice says STAR, go to a STAR station.

At Joe’s: JOE'S DRIVE THRU SMOG CHECK™ is a STAR station at 10909 Burbank Blvd, North Hollywood. Walk in, stay in your car, $60 out the door when your vehicle qualifies (2000–2026 gasoline or hybrid light duty; no diesel).

What if my car fails?

According to California DMV, contact the BAR Referee Program; you may also qualify for the BAR Consumer Assistance Program. See BAR (bar.ca.gov) for those programs. Joe’s is a drive-thru inspection station. We do not promise repairs here. If you are worried about a fail at our lane, ask about No Pass, No Pay®.

Do I need a smog if a family member gave me a car?

According to California DMV, generally no for a family gift from a spouse, domestic partner, sibling, child, parent, grandparent, or grandchild. But if they bought it for you without first titling it in their name, a smog is required. Keep your paperwork tight and confirm on the DMV smog page.

If I sell my car, do I need a smog first?

According to California DMV: yes. Give the new owner a valid smog certification. If the car is less than four years old, the new owner pays a smog transfer fee instead of a new inspection. See DMV for current fee details (we do not invent dollar amounts).

Is there a military exemption from smog?

According to California DMV: No. Active duty or veterans still need a smog inspection when one is required.

Out-of-state vehicles and California smog

Bringing a car into California? According to California DMV, out-of-state smog tests are not accepted. Most vehicles need a California-certified smog check (see DMV’s out-of-state title transfer checklist).

What DMV says you need for smog (HTVR 9)

Per DMV How To 9 / HTVR 9, a smog certification from a California smog station is required for:

• Gasoline-powered 1976 and newer (motorcycles exempt on that bullet)
• Diesel-powered 1998 and newer with GVWR under 14,001 lbs (including diesel hybrids)
• Natural gas or propane with GVWR under 14,001 lbs

At Joe’s: We can help many gasoline or hybrid light-duty 2000–2026 vehicles that need a California smog for first-time CA registration. We do not test diesel. If your vehicle is outside our years or fuel type, we will say so. Check BAR’s station locator or DMV rather than assuming every out-of-state vehicle can roll through our lane.

Smog is only one piece

Registering an out-of-state vehicle usually also needs VIN verification / in-person DMV steps, the out-of-state title, registration, California insurance, and more. See the out-of-state title transfer checklist and HTVR 9. Joe does the California smog piece when the vehicle qualifies. DMV handles the registration visit. We do not handle title transfer, VIN verification, use tax, or insurance.

New residents

According to the California DMV driver handbook, new residents generally have 20 days to register after becoming a resident or getting a job in California. Confirm current steps on dmv.ca.gov.

Not every “new” out-of-state vehicle can be registered here

California has 49-state vs California-certified emission rules and mileage thresholds. Example caution from DMV materials: California residents generally cannot bring in / register a vehicle less than 2 years old with under 7,500 miles unless it meets California emission standards or an exemption applies (see REG 256F / FFVR 29). Complex grey-market or 49-state cases belong with DMV and FFVR 29, not with a guess from us.

Out-of-state FAQ

Do I need a California smog if my car is registered in another state?

If you are registering it in California, according to DMV you generally need a California-certified smog when your vehicle type requires one. Out-of-state smog certificates are not accepted.

Will you accept an out-of-state smog certificate?

No. According to California DMV, you need California certification.

Can Joe’s do my out-of-state / first-time California smog?

Yes, when your vehicle qualifies: 2000–2026 gasoline or hybrid light duty only. No diesel. STAR station at 10909 Burbank Blvd. $60 out the door includes the certificate and electronic DMV transfer.

What else does DMV need besides the smog?

Title, registration paperwork, VIN verification, California insurance, and other checklist items. See HTVR 9, the out-of-state checklist, and FFVR 29. Joe’s does the California smog when you qualify; DMV does the rest.

Get your California smog at JOE'S DRIVE THRU SMOG CHECK™ when your vehicle qualifies (years/fuel), then finish registration with DMV. Start here: DMV Smog Inspections and How To 9 (out-of-state).
